THE SCHERVIER FAMILY FORUM
Renovations at Schervier
We
are delighted that our renovations are completed. We thank you for
your patience and hope you are as
pleased with the results as we are.

The new Café
These
major renovation projects have added new loveliness to our nursing care
center. Our lobby has been redesigned and is quite nice. The
new Café behind the lobby has more than doubled in size and is
beautiful, with a greenhouse-type window overlooking an interior garden
that will itself be renovated soon. The food is delicious, the prices
are reasonable and the atmosphere is terrific! Use of the
Café is limited to residents and families only, and the Employee
Cafeteria on the ground floor is limited to employees only...except on
weekends, when either the Cafeteria or the Café
will be open ... for all. Café food will not be
provided for take-out, and transactions are on a cash-only basis.
The two Respite Suites (see Respite on
the left-hand menu for
photos and description) are open. Each beautifully
appointed suite has a bedroom, living room and bathroom and
is available for short stays for individuals who require skilled care.
Normally these individuals are cared for at home but due to emergency
circumstances, health issues or travel plans the caregiver needs to find
temporary accommodations with supportive services to care for their
loved one. Or, when you need to recuperate after surgery,
and going home alone won’t provide the care you need, try Schervier
Respite Care for yourself!
Our new
Community Hall is also open. The Hall was gutted and entirely replaced with new
flooring, ceiling, windows, stage and wall finishes. New additions
include a pub and café seating area.
Short-term
rehabilitation patients here for the Burke at Schervier Rehab Program
are enjoying their new Rehab Suite on the first floor.
NEW VISITING HOURS
The new visiting
hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF SCHERVIER? There is something about Schervier that is more than just a place. Theres a warm, peaceful, protected feeling that is present as well. We call that feeling, that sense of connection surrounding our programs, the people we serve and the people dedicated to serving them, the Spirit of Schervier. That spirit encourages us to provide a level of caring beyond traditional expectations. We provide personal attention and compassionate care that embraces a human touch, attending to the needs of the whole person
body, mind and spirit.

VISITING PETS POLICY Schervier Nursing Care Center recognizes the therapeutic benefits of animal visitation and pet therapy programs. To insure the health, safety welfare and rights of all residents, staff, visitors and visiting animals, Schervier has a set of guidelines that comply with state regulations. They include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Animals visiting the facility must be clean, have up-to-date vaccinations, and be under the control of the handler at all times. 2. State and local laws regarding rabies prevention and animal licensure will be observed. 3. Animals visiting the facility are not permitted in food preparation areas, clean utility rooms, medication rooms, storage areas and dining rooms. 4. Animals visiting the facility will be permitted in recreation areas, day rooms, the lobby, gardens and hallwaysif leashed in transit. 5. Animals visiting the facility will be allowed in resident rooms if none of the occupants objects, and if the residents medical condition does not prohibit it. 6. Wild, dangerous or obviously ill animals are prohibited.
Schervier reserves the right to remove an animal from the premises or prohibit visits if we determine the animal presents a threat to our community.

SECURITY Schervier Nursing Care Center has a process in place that ensures the safety and well-being of all residents including those who are at risk of wandering. Some residents wear a security device, limiting their access to doorways and elevators when unescorted by a staff member or family/loved one. If you are present when an alarm goes off and see a resident alone, please do not merely disarm the alarm. Please bring the situation to a staff members attention.
|
COMPANION POLICY Schervier Nursing Care Center provides adequate and appropriate staffing levels for resident care; however, if a family member and/or resident wishes to engage a companion or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), they may but need to follow the policies and procedures established by Schervier.
A family may choose to hire a companion or CNA directly as long as that person has a current medical clearance and, in the case of a CNA, a current certification. Under no circumstances will a current Schervier employee be permitted to work as a private CNA or companion. Schervier is not responsible for the supervision of private certified nurse aides or companions and assumes no liability for their actions. In addition, Schervier retains full responsibility for care of its residents.

OUT-ON-PASS POLICY
Visits off the premises are designed to encourage residents to maintain contact with relatives and friends in the community and to participate in community activities. It is the policy of Schervier Nursing Care Center to allow residents to leave the premises for visits to the community. These visits may be for a period of time within the same day, overnight, or a number of approved days. Please contact the Head Nurse/Charge Nurse to arrange. And when a resident plans to be away from the facility overnight, the resident/responsible party needs to arrange it in advance so the Head Nurse/Charge Nurse can obtain physician approval and prepare the residents medications. In addition, it is also imperative that the resident/responsible party sign out prior to departure with the Head Nurse/Charge Nurse, and sign back in when he or she returns.
|
VISITORS RESPONSIBILITIES Medications: All medications are prescribed by the attending physician and in most cases are dispensed by the unit nurse. Residents and their families are responsible for giving any medications to the nurse on duty. Thank you for your cooperation. Alcohol: As alcohol may be contraindicated with many medications, doctors approval must be obtained for its use. No alcohol is permitted in the residents room. Tipping: Residents have the right to equitable treatment without tipping. Please observe the No Tipping policy.

SANCTITY OF LIFE Schervier Nursing Care Center has a Sanctity of Life policy that is in keeping with the conviction that all people are created in Gods image and are to be served equally and with dignity.
Every resident who has not legally refused will be provided all ordinary care consistent with respect for the sanctity of life. Ordinary care reflects the respect owed to every human life including the provision of food, shelter, fluids, clothing, and personal cleanliness will always be offered.
Treatment decisions rest with the resident who has decision-making capacity or with a legal guardian or health care proxy. For the resident who lacks decision-making capacity or a legally valid surrogate, decisions should be made consistent with the residents prior wishes and values as expressed in writing or interpreted by family or close friends including caretakers. However, because Schervier Nursing Care Center is a community, certain individual decisions may at times be overridden or transfer/discharge required by the Home when personal choices violate the rights of other residents or staff.
Schervier Nursing Care Centers Sanctity of Life policy upholds the values and principles that are inherent in the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Bishops. Our policy states that intended termination of any patients life, even at his/her request, is morally wrong and not permitted, nor is Euthanasia (Mercy Killing) in all its forms.

RESIDENT COUNCIL The Resident Council is the residents own form of government and the residents elect their own officers. The Council allows the residents to voice their issues and concerns as a group and to receive feedback from the appropriate administrative/department staff. Staff is invited to attend the meetings by invitation of the residents. The Council meets monthly and meetings are facilitated by the Recreation and Social Service Departments.

CLOTHING VENDOR Since its difficult for residents to go out and shop for clothing, and difficult for their loved ones to purchase appropriate clothinge.g. open-back dresses and nightgownsthe Unique Apparel Clothing Store comes to Schervier twice a year and sets up a store in the Community Hall. This allows residents to pick out their own clothing if they wish, or to have staff or family members purchase items for them. Everything is labeled and inventoried. Clothing can also be purchased throughout the year by calling Unique Apparels toll-free number: 800-526-0039. If you would like a catalogue, either see your residents social worker or call the stores toll-free number directly.
In addition, whenever you bring new clothes into the facility, please make sure they are sent to the Laundry Department to be labeled. This will prevent issues with lost and missing clothing.
|
SHOE VENDOR Due to various medical conditions coupled with the residents need for safe, comfortable shoes, Schervier arranges for Heels-On-Wheels to come in about once every six weeks to fit residents for shoes. Heels-On-Wheels specializes in shoes appropriate for nursing home residents, such as sneakers, orthopedic shoes, extra-wide shoes, washable shoes and shoes with Velcro that are easy to put on. If you would like your resident fitted for shoes, please contact their social worker who will make the necessary arrangements.
